As part of Project Samahita, a collaborative initiative led by Shanta Memorial Charitable Trust (SMRC), Handicap International and its partner organisations, we developed a comprehensive suite of training modules to strengthen the capacities of grassroots civil society organisations (CSOs) across Odisha. The project placed a strong emphasis on ensuring that gender equality and disability inclusion were not standalone topics, but principles woven throughout the learning materials.
The Goal
The objective was to create practical, accessible, and contextually relevant training resources that grassroots organisations could use to build stronger programmes, more inclusive practices, and greater organisational capacity. The modules also needed to be flexible enough to be delivered across different districts and adapted to diverse local contexts.
Our Approach
We developed 25 comprehensive training modules through a collaborative and participatory process. Rather than creating the content in isolation, we worked closely with project partners and stakeholders to ensure the materials reflected local realities and the needs of organisations working on the ground.
The development process included stakeholder consultations, iterative reviews, field-testing of the modules, and Training of Trainers (ToT) programmes. Feedback gathered at each stage helped refine both the content and delivery methods, making the modules practical, engaging, and easy to facilitate.
Across all modules, we integrated gender equality and disability inclusion as cross-cutting themes, ensuring that participants could apply inclusive approaches regardless of the subject area being covered.
The Impact
The project resulted in a comprehensive, region-specific training package that can be used and adapted by organisations at the block, district, and state levels.
Beyond producing a set of manuals, the project created a scalable learning resource that enables grassroots organisations to strengthen their capacities while embedding inclusion and equity into their everyday work.
